Mystery in the sky

I was driving my daughter to school this morning, heading east down my street and there was the strangest thing I've seen in the sky.

I literally turned my car around (a la Starsky & Hutch), drove home, ran downstairs to grab my camera and just barely caught the thing on film.

It looks like a comet, because it has a tail, but doesn't everything that falls into our atmosphere have a tail? Maybe it's some space junk? Just to give you some perspective, the mountain is Mount Timpanogos and it is almost 12,000 ft.

It looks like it's falling through the atmosphere, but maybe I'm just seeing a comet in space, like we sometimes see the moon in daylight hours.
The pictures here are the same, I just continued to enlarge it until I had a good shot of the 'comet'.
So, any astrologists out there that can help me solve this mystery?
Either way, it was beautiful! Sue

Hey I wonder if it was the Space Station. I know it's supposed to be over the Salt Lake area...good luck in your quest to find out!

Ooh, I love a mystery! Well, whatever it was it made for a very cool photo! Sue, it's so cool to find out you lived in Montreal! It is a great city, but you're right...way too cold...in the winter. I have been here 20 yrs and I still have not fully acclimatized!
