Studio 5: For "Peep" sakes Easter ensemble

Add something 'eggstra' special this weekend with some paper crafting

and a simple Easter egg shape.

When I create a card for any occasion, my starting point is often a simple shape that is immediately recognizable.  For a birthday use a balloon or a candle of a cake.  Christmas; a ornament or tree.  Halloween; a pumpkin or ghost.  These simple shapes are easy to cut and very versatile.  Here are a few creative ways to use simple shapes in your next paper crafting project.

1.      Silhouette:  The combination of a simple shape with colorful, patterned paper is a quick and easy way to dress up a card.

2.      Negative silhouette:  One of my favorite paper crafting techniques because it adds so much interest and dimension to a card.  When you cut out your silhouette, save what's left of the paper, layer patterned paper under it.  I hate throwing away my positive shapes, so I just use them on another project (like the peeps treat bag).

 Insert a white brad in center, or maybe a button, gem or some glitter glue.}

3.      Vary what you place under the negative silhouette.  Patterned paper is easiest, but it would be fun to use scraps of ribbon and trim, layers of tissue, strips of paper scraps.  It's fun to cut out your silhouette and lay it over a selection of these things until you find the perfect fit.

4.      More is better:  sometimes it is!  Repeating a pattern is pleasing to look and strengthens the card message.  Layer your silhouettes over each other and use foam squares to define them.

5.      Repeat negative silhouettes across the width of a card, layering complimenting paper under each one can quickly and easily fill up a space.

6.      Find creative ways to use that same simple shape for many projects; add to a napkin ring, create a place holder, name tag, treat bags, wreath or other home decor.  Once I have a shape and pattern that I like, I love taking it through my entire holiday on all these projects.  It cohesive and saves me time.
