Studio 5: My Funny Valentines

If you remember, last year, I did a Valentine segment for Studio 5 featuring projects from the Hardware store and perfect for the man in your life.

Well, this year I decided it would be fun to come up with a whole new bunch of creative cards, this time, with a funny bone.

I immediately had a few good ideas, but then got kind of stumped. It took several weeks for me to come up with ideas for you that were neither inappropriate for tv viewers (and me too!) or totally cornball! I also tried to create projects that touched on different people at different times of their lives. Married, single and loving it, single and hating it, techgeeks, cheeky and yes, even one slightly cornball card. I couldn't resist.

This first one is perfect for the 'old married couple'. I found this quote, which is really quite romantic and lovely and would do perfectly for a straight, unabashed valentine card, but it was just begging to be made fun of. Success!

Having spent quite a bit of time in airports of late, I noticed tons of these digital squares.

They are called QR Codes (Quick Response codes) and believe me you will see these more and more. Newspapers, magazines, ads, bulletin boards etc...

To read these codes you scan them with your smart phone. You will first have to download a free QR reader (which are free). If your recipient doesn't have one, load it while they aren't looking, you know, when they are actually separated from their phone...like in the shower! LOL

To create your own personal QR code you use a QR code generator. I used this one, but google it and there are tons. You can create a QR code that will lead you to a webpage, a text message or note on your phone.

If you want the one you see on my phone, guess what? Just scan in the image you see and you'll go right to it. So cool.

Once you've created your custom QR code, just save it and paste it in a word document, print and fold. Love how simple and techie this is.

I found this joke, laughed out loud and then started working on images. I knew it would be hard, but then found this illustration by Ron Leishman. Perfection!

I had to buy the image, but got permission from Ron for you all to download the card, print and use personally...yes, please don't sell it to Hallmark! :)

He gave the TV to me for free! He is awesome and prolific and has a great website (actually, several) called toon-a-day. Let's repay his kindness by signing up for his free service. This would make a great girlfriend or anti-valentine card (more on that later).

So, after I finally finished my projects and photographed them, I called my two daughters down to see their reaction to the projects.

I was frankly relieved...success! Mind you, they are 16 and 20! But I'm 48 and it worked for me.

This card made them smile, then after they opened it, I got that precious, "ahhhhhh". If you can get 2 emotions out of one card, you've got a winner.

Love how simple this card is, not to mention how free-ing it was to break a pencil ON PURPOSE. (note: used 1/2" glue dots to secure the pencil in place.)

Ready for cornball? Yup, here we go! I just couldn't resist, since us Neals have a thing for chickens.

I also have this fun, fancy chicken version of this card which is actually kind of funnier, but I really wanted to put a heart in the center of a chicken silhouette. I get in those moods sometimes.

Gee, I really want this chicken. Steve? Are you listening?

Here's another techie card. My 20-year-old loved it, she got really effusive about how much she loves her phone.

I love mine too. Hard to part with it.

Sometimes just putting the phone down or even turning it off is a sign of true love. Or maybe just politeness?

Can it get simpler than this? Print and fold. Great card for a man, because you know how many men actually read my blog?

So maybe you just need to pass it around for me.

Studies show that couples should kiss at least 5 seconds a day. At least that's what my husband told me (wink, wink).

Actually, there really are a ton of great reasons to kiss and if you'd like to know what they all are (and WOW, wouldn't this be a great QR link to send your loved one), please visit the best kissing website...don't worry, nothing inappropriate here, very cute.

Here's a cute way to create a little kissing anticipation. Tie a cellophane bag with the tag or tuck a single lemon in your partner's lunch for a fun surprise.

Don't like lemons? Try sour candy or a jar of pickles!

This Valentine is dedicated to my math geek son who is getting married this spring.

I have to tell you, this one got the biggest and longest laugh last night with my girls. Why? Emma's (my 20 year old) face screwed up in concentration as she tried to do the math. Priceless!! (note: Be sure to place the tags in order so they are read in the right order).

The whole time I was working on this project I had Pat Benatar singing in my head.

For those of you too young to know what an awesome rocker Benatar was, listen to her on youtube and while you're there, listen to the rest of her amazing 80's music.

For this little play on words, you'll need:

One 60 cc syringe
bag of valetine M&Ms
Heart pick
Printed tag

You probably won't find this larger syringe at a basic pharmacy. I got mine from Taylor Drug by the American Fork Hospital. Costs me .60 cents. Look for a dedicated pharmacy, usually by a hospital or medical center.

I've had this little Valentine ditty for years and it still makes me laugh.

It's another one of those anti-valentine projects. So, what, exactly is that? Here's a great explanation in the form of a joke by comedian Lewis Black,

"Valentine's Day: the feel-good holiday that reminds you that if you don't have a special someone, you're alone."

This way, people without a special someone get ot celebrate too...and eat chocolate, and laugh.

Back to the project: I printed everything on plain white printer paper so it would be easier to roll and crinkle.

Any bottle will do. Just tape one end down and roll. Tie ribbon around to secure. Fill bottle with Lindt balls. I tucket a bit of red tulle in the top before the final message so you can't see the balls. Take final message and wrap around one Lindt ball and tuck it at the top of the bottle.

For the intellectual or philosopher in your life, here's a perfect card, because you have to think a bit before it's funny.

I'm neither, but these glasses crack me up!

Got them at a dollar store for $2. Just print the card (not a folding one), punch the sides where the glasses will fold over and tape in place in the back.

I still remember Comedian Rita Rudner telling this joke. Priceless.

Not sure there is a real connection between the joke and this bandit/cupid, but I had to use him, he's just too funny.

And what is even funnier, is that I had to photoshop a fun...YES, a gun, out of his other hand, because, well, that was just too weird.

I'm leaving the strangest card for last.

And if you think I have finally lost what is left of my brain, then you obviously don't have teens or young adults in your life.

Zombies are very trendy.

So, in keeping with the younger crowd, here is my version of a valentine zombie card.

Phew! I'm done! All 13 projects and as always, I try to keep my cards to Studio 5 quick and ridiculously easy. Why? Because I know not all of you make cards. But chances are good you have a computer and a printer and someone you want to give a valentine card to.

Winter Crop & Card Retreat in Florida!

Home from Florida last night! It's always good to get away and always good to come back home.

Greeted by kids and a kitty who miss you, a familiar bed and TONS of work!!

Woke up at 4:30am this morning, my head swimming with all I have to do in the remaining 6 weeks before the cruise; Studio 5 on Thursday, Happy Family Album classes start next week and of course, all the fun classes, prizes and surprises for the cruise. Wish there were more hours in the day!

Oh, but what a treat it was to have a whole week in Florida in the middle of winter. Spent the first few days in Sebring at Hilltop Memories Winter Retreat.

It was great to re-connect with those of you who were in Utah a few years ago and really nice to make new friends as well. Yes, your names are all ringing in my head!

Love your energy, passion for the craft and overall nice-ness (is that a word?).

I know I missed a bunch of you in photos, too busy playing to take pictures! I'll catch you next time.

Thanks Linda for being such a incredible hostess, you created a warm and inviting environment (and the food was so good!).

Q's Creative Classes: Cricut keyboard code

I love my Cricut, but with gazillions of shapes in hundreds of cartridges, locating the perfect shape can be a frustrating and time-consuming experience.

In November, in an effort to help not just me, but my students as well, I introduced a new Cricut keyboard code.
Every Q's Creative Class Kit (starting Nov. 2011) will now have a keyboard code next to the Cricut shapes.

Example: Die-cut a 3" Flower with red cardstock (Lovely Floral Cart, code 0/4/7).

Now, you can quickly find the exact shape I used on the keyboard. The more you use the code, the faster you'll find the exact key. Now, I just look at the code and can visualize it.

Of course, when you purchase a Q's Creative Class Kit, you don't need to cut a thing! Everything is pre-cut and ready to assemble. However, I love to give my students the tools they need to make more of the same cards.

Some students prefer just to purchase extra kits, which are always discounted. Some like to get down and crafty, use my templates, digital elements and instructions to create more of the same, or change up the paper and some details for their own unique versions.

Cricut Circle Club Projects: October

I really appreciate being able to post my projects from Cricut Circle Magazine on my blog, but the 3-month rule makes it a little weird when it's the holidays!

Not sure you really want to see Halloween and Thanksgiving projects in January...do you?

So, I thought I'd start with this everyday card featuring this sweet little deer and frame from the Cindi Loo Cricut Cartridge.

Family Layout + Autumn = scraplift...and why not? I love this tree. Seriously, isn't it gorgeous? I pretty much love everything on the Heritage Cricut Cartridge. Go here to see the first time I used this tree.

Note to self: Get NEW familiy photos! These are great, but old!

If you know me, you know how much I love silhouettes and particularly the negative silhouette technique. In fact, hello? Didn't I just use this same technique last month? see it here.

This time I stamped a wood grain background and used the Thanksgiving Cartridge. If you love Thanksgiving, you really need (yes, it's a need) this cart.

For the ribbon detail, I took the ribbon through the name place hole. I attached the brad through the hole, but not through the ribbon, because, really, it's a pain. It was a tight enough fit to keep the ribbon in place. I really liked this look and will use it again.

Lastly, I almost hate to do this, because it's so glaringly NOT Halloween, but it's so cute and not scary and perfect for little kids class parties, which is what I was assigned.

I used the Happy Haunting Cartridge for the skull & crossbones (hey, it just occured to me how cute this would be for a pirate birthday party).

The box is from Wrap it Up cartridge.

My favorite part of this project was digging around my button room (yes, I have a whole room full of buttons, you can get lost in there!) to find the perfect ones for his eyes.

Here's a random thought you'll get a kick out of, mainly because if you're reading this blog, you're probably crafty and as obsessed with buttons and all things small and attachable to cards as me.

My dear sister in law is deathly afraid of buttons. (yes, you know which one you are). If they are loose. If they are sewn on, then it's ok. Hey, their are rules to these kind of phobias. About 25 years ago, when I lived about 2000 miles away from her, I actually sent her a box of loose buttons. Really? Why would I do that if I didn't really have an evil streak in me somewhere?

Then last year, on vacation, I found a really cute button necklace, which I promptly bought and gave to her and then promptly took back because she didn't think it was very funny. But why?

His name was accidentally left off of the credits, however, leading many to believe (erroneously) that the cartoon's narrator, Boris Karloff, sang the song.

Television, when growing up, was a little black & white box with ears. But I vividly remember anxiously awaiting my favorite Christmas shows, with Rudoph the Red Nosed Reindeer my very favorite. Picture Perfect Winter Wonderland

I've been holding on to this picture for a while now, just waiting, with baiting breath for the first snow of the season...well, it finally arrived. This morning!

It's that perfect, softly falling, fluffy, large, super white flakes, covering everything in picture perfect winter wonderland.

A few days ago Savannah came to me, pointed out the window and said "what is WRONG with this picture?? It's December and we still don't have any snow!" She was pretty ticked. But this morning, she burst into our room with a big smile on her face. She is a happy girl and so am I.

Did you know that only 25% of the country even has snow right now? That is just tragic! So, hopefully my little snowman/puppy picture will make up for it. Super cute, eh? (no, they are not mine).

Studio 5: Puff Pastry Quick & Easy Bites

As much as I love to cook, I LOVE to spend time with family & friends during the holiday season. I'm always looking for ways to celebrate with as little fuss as possible. My secret (but not anymore!) weapon/ingredient...Puff Pastry!

It can be a little intimidating... maybe it's the word 'pastry', maybe because it's frozen? It's actually quite forgiving and I think much easier to use then Filo dough.

First of all, you can find Frozen Puff Pastry in the freezer section of any grocery store. Walmart seemed to have the best price of about $4 a package. I like to have a few of these in my freezer all the time for those last-minute needs, which seem to pop up more during the holidays than any other time.

You'll get 2 sections in each package. You can wrap up the 2nd section and keep it in the fridge for a few days if you need to.

It's best to defrost in the fridge, but you can do a quick thaw that takes about 30 minutes. You can learn everything (and I do mean EVERYTHING) you wanted to know about puff pastry at http://www.puffpastry.com/. Yes, there is an entire website devoted to it.

Just make sure your pastry is cold to the touch and keep it a little floured so it isn't sticky.

You really only need a rolling pin and a knife to create shapes, but I will say I do enjoy using some of these tools.

That's it! The rest is just your creativity and some egg wash :). You'll need that to make it stick together and give it that pretty sheen when baked.

I've prepared 10 super easy holiday bites (both savory and sweet) for you, most with ingredients I had on hand. Remember, these can be made ahead of time, kept in the fridge (or even the freezer) and then baked right before you need them.

Palmiers (elephant ears)

3 ingredients. Sugar, Salt & 1/2 pkg. Puff Pastry. 350 Oven.

Mix 1 cup sugar with 1/2 tsp coarse salt.

Cover the rolling area with about a cup of white sugar. Place pastry on top of it. cover the top with more white sugar.

Roll out so sugar is embedded into the dough. Roll to approx. 10" square.

Fold ends towards center. Do it again. You now have a rectangle with 8 layers. Cut into 3/8" pieces and lay on parchment paper cut side up. Leave lots of space between each Palmier, as they will spread. After 5 minutes turn Palmiers over. Cook for another 3 minutes. Watch closely so sugar doesn't burn. Cool.

Options: Add a little cinnamon to your sugar. Or dip half the Palmier in chocolate.

Proscuitto Twists

3 ingredients: Thinly sliced proscuitto, butter, Italian seasoning and puff pastry. 400 Oven.

Roll out pastry into square. Cut into 1/2" strips. Brush with egg wash (1 egg mixed with 1 Tbsp water). Lay strips of Proscuitto on each strip. Transfer and twist as you lay each piece on baking sheet. Brush exposed pastry with more egg wash and sprinkle with seasoning.

Bake for 20 minutes of until golden brown. Remove and immediately brush exposed pastry with melted butter.

Smokie wraps

3 ingredients: Little Smokies, Honey Dijon mustard and Puff Pastry. 400 Oven.

Roll out pastry into square. Cut in to 1/2" strips. Spread each strip generously with mustard. Place Smokie at bottom of strip and roll, making sure to overlap pastry. Brush tops with egg wash and bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. Insert toothpick if desired. Serve with dipping sauce if desired.

Lingonberry Meatball Croissant

3 ingredients: Meatballs, Lingonberry sauce and Puff Pastry. 400 oven.

I used the chicken meatballs from costco, but any will do. I got the Lingonberry sauce from Ikea. So good!

Roll out pastry into square. Cut into 3" squares. Place hand a meatball, cut side down in middle of square. Place a scant tsp of sauce over the top. Let is drop down the sides a bit. Moisten the opposing corners with egg wash and wrap over the meatball, pressing to make sure it won't come undone. Brush exposed pastry with egg wash and bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Baked Caramel Apple

Puff pastry is commonly used for whole baked apples. I came up with this mini version that is so fun to pop into your mouth. Make sure it cools a bit though!

5 ingredients: Baking Apple, Sugar, cinnamon, Wrapped caramels and Puff Pastry. 450 oven.

Peel apple. Use a melon scooper to scoop out a ball from apple. It doesn't have to be perfect. Mix some sugar and cinnamon in a bowl and roll apple balls in it.

Roll out pastry dough into a square and cut 3" squares. Place apple/sugar balls in center. Cut caramel squares into 3 and place one piece on top of apple. Pull all four corners on top of caramel to create a parcel. Use egg wash to secure. Brush exposed pastry with egg wash and bake for 10 minutes or until golden brown.

Tomato Cheese pizza bites

5 Ingredients: Ripe tomatoes (smallish), Monterey Jack Cheese, Goat Cheese and Fresh basil or parsley. 400 oven.

Roll out pastry into a square and cut with a 3" circle cutter (I used a fluted one). Place on parchment paper on baking sheet.

Lay 2 thin pieces of Jack cheese. Lay tomato on top of that. Salt & pepper. Sprinkle minced herbs and a little bit of goat cheese.

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Mushroom Sausage Parcels

5 ingredients: Medium sized mushrooms, sun dried tomatoes, breakfast sausage links and Gruyere cheese. 400 oven.

Roll out pastry sheet into a square. Cut 3" squares.

Brush mushrooms to clean and remove stem. Place a small piece of sun dried tomatoes on the inside and then a small piece of sausage into that. Place mushroom down, smooth side up on pastry. Wrap pastry around it, using egg wash to secure. Place on baking sheet and brush exposed pastry with egg wash. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning. (I like Johnny's Garlic).

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

White chocolate Cheese tartlets

Roll out pastry and cut into 3" square. Cut in half to create triangles. use egg wash to connect two points of rectangle and push into a mini muffin pan. One corner will be high that the rest. Bake at 400 for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

ingredients:

· 6 oz. good-quality white chocolate, chopped.

· 12 oz. cream cheese, room temp.

· 1/2 cup butter, room temp.

· 1/4 cup powdered sugar

· 2 1/2 tsp. vanilla

· 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

Whip cheese cake ingredients until fluffy. Pipe on top of cooled pastry and top with a fresh raspberry or some other kind of fruit. Dust with powdered sugar.

Shallot and Bacon Tartlets

Roll out pastry and cut into 2 1/2" square and place into a mini muffin pan.

ingredients:

· 1 egg

· 2 Tbsp half & half cream

· Salt & Pepper

Place 1 tsp of caramelized onions and a few pieces of bacon in bottom of each pastry cup. Pour 1 tsp. egg mixture over onion/bacon. Sprinkle with a bit of green onion and top with a few pieces of grape tomatoes, cut into quarters.

Bake at 400 for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Cobb Salad Mini Sandwiches

I'm a big fan of a Cobb Salad...here it is in mini sandwich form. What a yummy bite!

Roll out pastry and cut into 3" fluted circles and place onto a baking sheet with parchment paper. Bake at 250 for 25 minutes or until gold brown. let cool and then carefully cut in half with a serrated knife.

ingredients:

· 3 hardboiled eggs, chopped.

· 1/2 cup seafood (I used Lagostinos, but shrimp or crab will also work well)

· 2 Tbsp. Cooked bacon, minced

· 2 Tbsp. Green Onion, minced

· 2 Tbsp. Crumbled Blue Cheese

· 2 Tbsp. Celery, minced

· 1/4 cup mayonaise

· Salt & Pepper

Mix all ingredients to create salad. Fill puff pastry sandwiches and place as thin slice of tomato (cut in half) on it.

Studio 5: Re-purposing Calendars

Oh, it was great to be back on Studio 5 again! It's been too long! Had lots of fun preparing these segments and hope you enjoy them. Please watch the video, but read the article too, as I hardly touched on all my ideas. As always too little time! (you can see and read the 2nd part of my visit to Studio 5: Puff Pastry here)

Most of us have a wall calendar on our wall and go to great lengths (at least I do) to pick the perfect one. The one that matches my tastes and my home decor. It always hurts me to throw it away come January 1st, so I usually hang on to them for a few years. Not anymore! I am hooked! Not only will I repurpose the calendars I've used, but now I'm on the hunt for old calendars on clearance.

Probably the easiest way to re-purpose those beautiful prints and photographs is to simply frame them.

Crop them, mat them, even embellish them for a completely new look.

And because they are 'free', you can switch them out whenever you tire of them. But don't throw them away...use them in one of many other ideas I have for a secondary re-purposing!

As a card maker, I was thrilled at how many cards I could get out of one calendar! Here's an example of one sheet from last year's calendar I made into 3 legal sized cards. You can keep it super simple or do a little embellishing to dress it up.

I think this could be a fun get-together with your card making friends come January. Bring your calendars and see how many cards you can create.

To make this task a little easier I created card making templates. You can download those templates here. Go to the PDF file Tab on top to access the downloads. Simply print and cut out the window. Now you're ready to use these windows to find the perfect place to cut out your calendar pages.

Little desk calendar are great to re-purposing too.

I used this little baby animals desk calendar to create a child's busy book.

I laminated the pages and had it bound. Cost me about $3 and it's adorable! Even my 15 year old daughter enjoyed it.

I used another desk calendar with inspirational thoughts for women to create this friendship mini album.

Most wall calendars use seasonal illustrations and photos to match the month and every December has Christmas images. They can transform ordinary gift bags (even ones you get when you shop) into one of kind originals.

This was so fun, I wished I had more calendars to make more gift bags!

I also really enjoyed using my calendars in home decor. My favorite was doing a hard lamination to create place mats. It's trendy and fun to mix & match your table decor and this lends itself perfectly to that. They will be different, but usually the illustrations are by the same artist so there is a continuity that ties it all together.

I also used them to cover the base of serving platters and plates (as long as they are flat). Best part is they are removeable. ( I used ATG scotch tape for all of my projects.)

I also played around with soft lamintation and was happy to discover how easy it was to wrap it around my glass vases. They were really stunning.

Again, completely removable if I needed the vase with just the glass or if I wanted to change up the look.

I have several religion-themed calendars that I just couldn't throw away over the years...so glad I didn't.

I'm teaching 11-year-olds at my church and these turned into great visual aids.

Keep the study envelope that these calendars usually come in to store the pictures.

Roberts Crafts Stores closing

I'm very sad to report that all Roberts Crafts Stores in Utah will be closing Dec. 31st. You can read the official press release here.

I will be holding my December classes as advertised here. However, I will have new places to replace my Roberts locations for February (no classes in January due to surgery and cruise prep).
I will be posting my February class here in a few days (such a FUN project!) and where we will be meeting then. Most likely more Hobby Lobbys around the state.

We will all certainly miss the warmth of classroom studios and all the great supplies Roberts provided for us. However, I've been teaching at Hobby Lobby in Layton, Ut for awhile now and it's been great.

Cricut Circle Club Projects: September

Here are my projects for the September issue of Cricut Circle magazine.

I had to get these gorgeous fall colors up before we change to red & greens!

I used probably my all-time favorite Cricut technique, negative silhouettes with this card. I just love the dimension and layering.

Looking forward to making more versions of this card in different colors and patterns.

I've been wanting to use this darling squirrel from Disney's Happily Ever After Cartridge since I bought it years ago. So happy to put him on paper!

The rich & vibrant paper and die-cut are by Imaginesce.

Lastly, a quick set of Fall Cards using a house die-cut and chipboard diecuts from Imaginesce again. The die-cuts made this super quick & easy!

Cricut Circle Club Projects: August

{Outline Rose Card using exclusive Sophie Cartridge}

In June I was invited to be a design team member at Cricut Circle Club magazine...to be honest, after many great years working with magazines I was prepared to say no.

But how could I? This was Cricut afterall. I hold Cricut and Photoshop as the the two greatest creative inspirations I have going!

So here I am, just finishing up my fourth month at Cricut Circle Magazine. If you're already a member, maybe you've seen some of my projects. If not, I've got permission to post them (3 months out) on my blog.

Just one of them is getting four exclusive Cricut cartridges a year. I used the Sophie cartridge to create this beautiful outline rose shape. I played around with techniques with these shapes and ended up with one I love. If you cut your outline from white cardstock and then lightly sponge black ink on it, it begins to look metallic, almost pewter. In retrospect, I think if I had brushed on a light coating of glitter glue or glossy accents it would have been even better. I also used ink on the red shape to give it more depth.

A very simple card that any teacher would love to receive. Easy enough that your children could make their own.

I used the apple shape from Plantin Schoolbook cartridge and the 'welcome' from Straight from the Nest

Cartridge.

I've been wanting to use the Graphically Speaking Cartidge more often and found the perfect opportunity with this assignment. A thank you gift for your child's coach. Fits nicely over a giant sized chocolate bar, but you could easily make this into a card of gift bag.

Wedding Cake #3: Audrey & Mike

This is my third wedding cake...this time for a very sweet woman, friend and student of mine, Audrey.

It was an honor to be just a wee part of this special day.

Best part of this cake was the inside...Audrey had requested a banana cake and I played around with a recipe until it was a winner. This recipe works well for a wedding cake, but is also great in smaller versions or even cupcake/muffins. I added coconut to my cupcake/muffins and loved it!

Buttermilk Banana Cake

2 1/2 cups all purpose flour

1 Tbsp Baking Powder

1/2 tsp. fine sea salt

3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) butter, room temp.

2 1/2 cups sugar

6 large eggs

1 cup plus 2 Tbsp. buttermilk

4-5 small very ripe bananas (aobut 1 1/2 cups)

Preheat oven to 350 F. Butter & flour two 9" diameter pans with 1 1/2" sides.

Sift flour and baking powder into bowl. Add salt and mix.

Beat butter, then slowly add sugar until light and fluffly.

Add one egg at a time, beating between each one.

Add dry ingredients to butter mixture in 4 additions alternately with buttermilk in 3 additions. Do not over-mix.

Bake cakes until tester inserted into center comes out clean, approx. 35 minutes. Transfer to rack; cool 15 minutes. Invert cakes onto racks; cool completely. These freeze very well. After completely cooled, wrap in plastic wrap very well.

Option: I poked the cake all over with a toothpick and poured a butterscotch syrup over the cake. This made for a very rich and moist cake. If you do this step be sure to place a round of waxed paper or parchment paper over the top before you wrap with plastic wrap.

Butterscotch Syrup

1 ½ c. sugar
1 ½ cubes butter
2 Tbsp white corn syrup
¾ C. buttermilk
1 tsp. soda
2 tsp. vanilla

Combine all ingredients but vanilla in saucepan. Cook 7 minutes, stirring every so often, barely boiling. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Store in fridge. Reheat to serve.

White Chocolate Cream Cheese Frosting

{this is deadly good}

6 oz. good-quality white chocolate, chopped.

12 oz. cream cheese, room temp.

1/2 cup butter, room temp.

1/4 cup powdered sugar

2 1/2 tsp. vanilla

2 1/2 tsp. coconut extract

2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

Melt white chocolate over double-boiler until melted. Let cool to room temp, about 5 minutes, it will be slightly warm to the touch.

Beat cream cheese and butter in large bowl until light and fluffly. gradually beat in the melted white chocolate. If you put this in when it's too warm, then it will not be smooth, which happened to me on a test batch, but to be honest, it was still delicious, so DO NOT throw it away! :)

Add the rest of the ingredients and beat until smooth and mixed in. Will store in the fridge for a few weeks.

Q's Creative Copic Christmas Card Class

It's taken almost a year, but I finally put together a Copic class.

For those of you who know what Copic Markers are (and even own them!), come join me for a fun technique based class.

For those who are wondering what Copic is...please read on below.

Copic Markers are no ordinary markers! These are superior markers used by artists world-wide. These will last a life-time because the ink is refillable and the nibs are replaceable. {For the same reason I'm a big believer is buying ink pad refills to extend the life of your ink pads indefinitely.}

Using these markers and applying the tips & techniques you'll learn in class will make your stamped images pop with vibrant color!

Dig out all those stamps you've hidden away and bring them to life with Copic markers!

Blessings Brighten Thanksgiving Bonus!

Real Turkeys are kind of ugly, which is probably why we eat them.

My paper turkeys are cute and they do not taste very good.

This paper crafted Thanksgiving ensemble is a bonus project attached to my Autumn Blessings Class. It will include instructions only, on how to create a centerpiece (two-sided), a place card and a gift bag; perfect for delivering a few pumpkin chocolate-chip cookies to neighbors, teachers or as a table favor.

The Perfect Wall

It might surprise you to find out, that despite my crafty abilties, I'm just not that great a home decorator. I know, I'm going to hear about this...YES, please post comments telling me how good I really am. :)

I just look at those big blank walls sometimes and am STUMPED. How about you?

Well, Mandy Douglas, a friend and fellow Studio 5 contributor shared some great ideas for recording our children's growth and included in her piece was exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you Mandy!

In fact, when I re-did my downstairs family room two years ago, I had decided to create a travel theme. We love to travel, camp and spend time as a family having lots of little (and sometimes big) adventures. I wanted to use all those photos and momentos to decorate.

Guess what? My walls are still blank. In fact, I just said to my husband the other day "I really, really, need to do this room!"

I am SO doing this. It's perfect and will definately take up a WHOLE wall. Problem solved.

Cool Tool: Garlic Grater

I was at the Utah State fair last week. Had a great time: Funnel Cake, Onion blossom, new bunny AND really, kind of the best part? This "where have you been all my life" garlic grater.

So, I was doing a little online research; basically seeing if I got a good deal (and I did) when I came across this guys (Dave) blog. He had a very similar experience as he also bought his at a fair.

So, since I'm SO busy working on our school's fall festival, I decided to just link you to Dave's blog, Dave's cupboard. He's got some great pics too.

What to do with all those tomatos on the vine?

Here's a repeat from last year. I've had a few requests in class, because yes, we talk about food in class!

But a little update: Since last year, I invested in a Vitamix Blender (for green smoothies). I used it instead of an immersion blender for this recipe and wow, no straining necessary, it was smooth as silk in the vitamix.

I made this last night and it was a little acidic. Weather affects the acidity level; last year they were perfect. I think I should have added just a touch of sugar to combat that. I have leftovers so I will try that today at lunch and let you know.

Instead of croutons, I made grilled cheese sandwiches on Rustic bread. Yummy!

P.S. I also noticed I don't mention salt. HOW is that possible?? You have to add salt to bring out all those flavors. I love, pepper, so I also add that to finish the bowl.

It's getting close, that moment when you have to get all your tomatoes out of the garden before it freezes. It hasn't frozen quite yet, but I knew I'd better start harvesting what was left. My favorite thing to do with all those vine ripe tomatoes at the end of the season is to make Roasted Tomato Soup.

I topped my soup with some fresh snipped basil and home-made garlic croutons. So perfect on cool, rainy day like today.

Autumn arrives and I feel like I've come home. There is so much I love about this season, that's it's always a challenge to narrow down my choices.

Despite being HOT outside, I have mentally left summer behind and am moving on. To Fall. Autumn. My personal favorite time of year.

My son posted this video on Facebook and I knew I had to share it with you.

Despite having done this very thing about 2 weeks ago...wait, what? Susan BOUGHT a card??? Ok, I'll interupt this thought to explain, otherwise I know I'll hfdear no end to it once my classes start up in September.

Yes, I bought a card. I will say it's the only card I've bought in probably 5 years. I bought one before that too, the 5 years before that. Interestingly, both cards were for my sons. This most recent one was for my son who lives in the Memphis area. I kind for forgot to buy him a gift, so I thought I could make up for it by sending him one of those talking, singing cards. I was, NO KIDDING, a good half hour in the aisle, doing pretty much what Kevin James was making fun of in the video.

So, think about this fellow card makers. THINK about how much time (and emotional energy) we save by making our own cards. Now, doesn't that feel good? Just my happy thought for the day. :)

I made this card this morning... It's rare for me to make a card that isn't for something; classes, magazines, Studio 5, card group etc...

It was fun to just make a card to share with you and no other reason! I've been organizing my work room and with it all the scraps of paper I've accumulated. I used this gorgeous paper from My Mind's Eye for a Studio 5 project and had leftover bits with beautiful glittered scrolls; I couldn't throw that away!

I actually stamped my sentiment (I used to stamp everything, but hardly do anymore), sewed on a little lace and layered some florals I had in my stash. It's quite simple, but pretty and really quick.

Sometimes I get lucky.

Melissa Quigley shared some Studio 5 air time with me on Monday. She did an adorable Woodsy Themed decor segment, but what what seemed to really get Brooke's attention was the squares on display. Me too. :)

I ate my square on the way home...yes, lunch. First bite was delicious and then about 30 seconds later I got part 2 of this delicious square...heat! That's why they're called "Spicey Smokey Smores". Melissa put Cayenne in the chocolate ganache...whoa! If you're nervous about the heat, start with 1/4 tsp. cayenne and work your way up.

This blog has been pretty quiet lately...what have I been up to? Summer! Lots of family, fun and frolicking. but you know, that can only go for so long, sadly.

Lasting Memory with Mom

My Mom has been a widow for many years now and one of my great pleasures is taking her on adventures. My dad did plenty of that and I just feel I needed to fill the void.

So when a Groupon showed up in my inbox for Hot Air Ballooning I remembered that Mom always wanted to go up in one and I snatched them up!

It was a cool, misty morning up in Park City last week and I was worried we wouldn't be able to see anything, but it was actually quite beautiful and eventually burned off.

It all started with a bag. And a basket. It's hard to believe that bag would eventually fill the sky.

We got to help out as they turned on the fan and blew air into the balloon. It made it quite chilly for me, the fan kept vibrating right in my direction!

That other balloon in the background was for a group of sky divers. They crowded 12 people in the basket, standing room only and yes, they jumped OUT of the balloon. Ok, I'm not that adventurous.

Ready to take off...and really, it doesn't feel like taking off in the literal sense. It was the most amazing feeling, like you were a balloon. It was very gentle.

I suppose I could wax philosophical, but I'll leave it to your imagination. Those wires on either side were the only thing holding us all up!

After spending quite a bit of time above the world, our pilot took us around a small mountain, just skirting the edge, our basket touching the tops of trees. My Mom said, "This is like hiking without all the work!"

After a perfect landing, we got to help deflate the balloon and somehow, magically get it to fit back into that bag. That was a work-out!

So glad we had this opportunity to spend time with my Mom and create a lasting memory.

Over the last 15 years I've planted 25 trees in my small yard. Crazy, huh?

I grew up around forests and I guess I wanted to grow one. One of the best rewards for this investment is the birds. Each year, as the trees grow, the variety of birds do as well.

This class combines my love of birds, a gorgeous color combo and clever paper crafted projects all using envelopes!

Studio 5 Trend alert: Cabochons!

It was French day at Studio 5. Amy Richardson did Macarons in the kitchen and I did crafty Cabochons! It was fun to hear everyone trying to pronounce the words correctly. What exactly IS a Cabochon? You can watch the video segment or read on for a full explanation.

Today, on tv, I compared women to Magpies. Ouch! I may suffer for that...but truly, if it's small, shiny and detailed, it's almost irresistible! The latest trend in design, whether it's scrapbooking, card making, jewelry, home decor or fashion is Cabochons and they are HOT! {see below for give-away!}
Before we take a product & project tour, let's define the word.

cab•o•chon

Noun
1. a precious stone of convex hemispherical or oval form, polished but not cut into facets.
2. an ornamental motif resembling this, either concave or convex and often surrounded by ornately carved leaf patterns, used on furniture of the 18th century.
Origin
1570–80; Middle French, equivalent to caboche head ( see cabbage )
Clou à tête décorative. - decorative head

It's important to understand what a Cabochon is because not every manufacturer will call it a cabochon. Prima calls theirs Flower Sculptures, Making Memories call theirs Baubles, etc...

My definition? Any small detailed decorative hard embellishment.

They can be made of resin, metal, glass or other hard materials. They are generally flat-bottomed to make it easier to adhere to projects.

Some manufacturers have made them into brads, but if not, they are light and easy to adhere with glue dots, E6000, super glue, hot glue etc...

Even though the domed glass cabochons have been around for a long time, the carved-looking resin flowers are a newer trend that many scrapbooking manufacturers are jumping on...happy for us!

Once you've collected these little treasures, you'll want ot start showing them off in all your crafting projects.

Let's start with the most obvious application...jewelry and hair accessories.

It couldn't be easier or more fun! There are so many inexpensive jewelry pieces at craft stores that require just a few simple steps before you're wearing your art.

What I liked best about this application is how I could customize my colors...IF you use glue dots. That may not seem strong enough, but if you use them in strategic places, they are fine. I wore those yellow rose cabochons all day (see video) on my earrings and necklace and they are still there.
Cabochons work well on all your home decor pieces and scrapbook pages.

Over all color and design is pleasing to the eye, but it's those little details that bring a person in close...the look lingers, trying to take it all in.

Because I didn't have a lot of time to design for this segment, I looked at projects I already had and almost all of them had a place for a cabochon or two.

I tried to experiment with these, even toyed with the idea of heating them up with a heat gun, but apart from drilling a hole in them or adding glitter, I felt they stood on their own.

Let's not forget my favorite craft...card making!

My students will recognize these cards from past classes...look how easy it was to add a little cabochon for a pop of color and dimension.

TSC Walk - Big Thanks!

Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day for both the Race for the Cure and the TSC walk here in Salt Lake City.

Savannah enjoyed being there and seeing families from all over Utah who share the same issues she does.

One of the things I learned this weekend is that Tuberous Sclerosis is the leading genetic cause for Austism and Epilepsy and that donations to TSC helps research into these areas as well.

I want to thank all of you for your kindness, encouragment and donations too... We raised almost $500! You can still donate online if you missed it.

Cure Tuberous Sclerosis!

On May 7th, our family will be participating in a 5K walkathon to raise funds for TSC (Tuberous Sclerosis) research.

Why?

The first time we heard of TSC was when our 1-year-old daughter, Savannah, was diagnosed with it in 1997. Today, (despite a frightening few first years of her life) Savannah is a happy, healthy 15-year-old but will spend her life and possibly the life of her children dealing with the challenges of this condition.

We are hoping on raising $1000! If only 100 of our friends just donate $10 each we'll make it!

Commit

Leaving the tech-world behind and the never-ending list of things to do, my family headed down to an isolated and beautiful part of Utah; Kodachrome State Park.

Food, water, hiking shoes, sunblock, a good book and a sense of adventure...that's all I needed for this year's spring break.

I noted and photographed great beauty that week, but I also noted something that I can't record. Quiet. Absolute, wonderful quiet. The kind of quiet that begs to be filled with reflection. I realized how little I had done this in the hustle and bustle of my everyday life.

Despite being wholly out of shape, I put one step in front of the other and let my mind (not my body) dictate what I would and could do.

One day, we had decided to do another hike before the sun set. It was to an arch, but what really caught our attention was a rock crevice. My husband had scrambled up this sandy draw and stood at the base of the crevice. He couldn't get up, it was too loose and steep.

I would not be deterred! "Let me give you a hand or push you." We tried, but it was too slippery. He tried again, this time getting a bit of momentum (not much room to do that) and made it up. Woo Hoo!

Then I tried a few times, but there was NO way! I just couldn't get any purchase, there were no hand or foot holds and the sand made it very slippery. Steve was already up at the top, seeing what was on the other side. It was killing me. I wanted to be there. I wanted to see too!

He said to me, "You have to commit".

He was right. I was letting my fear get the best of me. I tried again and this time made it to the point where I could brace myself on the narrow walls of the crevice.

As I reached the top, perched precariously on a very narrow piece of ground, I saw the other side.

Two more narrow, steep crevices headed down to the valley floor.

I was tempted to follow them, but they turned corners and for all I knew, it was a 100 foot drop off at the end. I may be adventurous, but I'm not stupid!

We congratulated ourselves and moved on. I was exhilarated!

Our next adventure, the next day, was one of many slot canyons in the area. You can see the beginning of it here as I pose with my brother after we climbed back out.

Here is the entrance. Deep, dark and 'wow, really? How am I going to get down there?"

My son Jordan didn't hestitate and was down pretty quickly. Again, I was in a situation where I had to commit. There was no going back on this descent. And then, it bore the question, will I be able to get back up?

I love slot canyons, I'm absolutely fascinated by them. I had to get down there! I took a deep breath and went for it. It wasn't elegant, but I did it.

We entered a hidden world of narrow passages, delicately carved rock, a playground of light and potential danger.

We saw evidence of violent flash floods that would sweep heavy tree trunks and large rocks like they were toys. The slot widened and the clifts got higher. It was spectacular and I would have missed the whole thing if I hadn't had the courage to descend.

Of course, these little hiking adventures might have only resulted in a bruised knee, (not that much of a risk) but the thrill of moving forward reminded me that it's been awhile since I challenged myself.

I reflected on what that word, commit, means to me. To commit is to move forward with a decision, despite fear of failure, despite fear of getting hurt. To commit is the process, not the result. It's that process that has taught me the most, defined my character and given me joy.

I liken that slot canyon to my 29-year marriage to my partner and husband, Steven. The greatest committment I have and will ever make in this life.

But committments don't have to be big and sometimes all we need is a small one to inject some excitement and joy into our lives. The next time I hesitate to move forward... to commit, I'm going to remember my ascent and my descent this last week and my husband's encouraging words "you have to commit!"

Wedding Cake Adventures: Part II

Something possessed me to offer my extremely limited cake-making abilities to my niece, Leia, when I found out she was getting married.

She took me up on it and graciously told me she really didn't care about the cake...perfect! Permission to really mess it up!

I drew a sketch of a beautiful 5-tier cake. Two bottom square layers (largest 16" square, next 12" square, then a 10", 8" and 6" round cake. Colors to match hers; red, black and blue.

She mentioned Roses and black lace. Really, having known my niece since she was born, it was quite easy to picture the perfect cake for her. a Princess cake!

I made the cakes and got them in the freezer, almost 20 batches of cake!

I started on the Roses a couple of weeks ago. Made out of sugar paste, I googled every Gum-paste rose tutorial I could find and made my first attempt.

Bah!

My first five just didn't look very good, but I started getting the hang of it and started in on what would become a very long process.

I started by coloring the fondant to a deep red. It took a ton of red paste to achieve that color, but I will say, that after letting it sit, the color became more bright and red.

I rolled out a small piece of gumpaste and cut out my petals. Then each petal had to be rolled out to a very thin and slightly curved petal. It kept drying out on me, so I got very good at keeping the paste and petals covered.

I used 6" sticks for the pick and created the bud first (small tear drop shape at the end of pick).

With a little brush of water, I started to curl each petal around the bud. You can see the progression in this photo. Each Rose took about 18-20 petals. I made almost 40 Roses, but 12 of them were not fully opened.

In the end (about 1/2 hour per Rose...is that slow?) I had a whole bouquet of sugar Roses, making the cake completely edible. Not that anyone would enjoy eating one of these!

I made a ton of little blue flowers in two sizes. The larger ones got a sugar pearl in the center, the smaller one got a silver non-pareil. I wasn't quite sure how I was going to use them, but wanted a little touch of the blue in the cake. I ended up using the smaller ones in the center of each quilt intersection, and they also hid a few dowels!

Sunday morning I started to assemble the cake.

I started with the largest layer, the square bottom. I got it all iced and ready for the fondant. The next few hours were not pleasant.

Try as I might, I simply could not get the fondant on that cake without it cracking. I'm not entirely sure what the problem was, but I think it may have had something to do with the red and black color paste I used in it, as the texture was very different than using white fondant. It was also very hard to roll out a large enough piece to cover a 16" x 16" x 4" cake!

After four 4 tries, I gave up.

We tore off the red fondant and took a picture or it and the cake underneath. Not so pretty. Within seconds of this moment, the doorbell rang. There was Leia, her husband-to-be and her cousin...big smiles! Anxious to see how the cake was coming along.

Argggggg! We all stood guard and unequivocally told them 'no, sorry, you can't see it'.

I think Leia thought I was joking, but a few minutes later, she knew it wasn't funny at all! There was simply no way I was going to get her all stressed out over my disaster on the kitchen table.

I took a deep breath and made a decision. My 5-tier cake was turning into a 4-tier cake! Instead of taking out the next square layers out of the freezer, I cut down the one I had already been working on. It was still very challenging to get it covered with the red fondant, but somehow (with a little prayer), we got it on. The corners were horrible, but I had plans for camouflage!

It was such a relief to get the bottom layer done, but it was getting late. I still had a lot to do! The round cakes and white fondant went together quickly. In the process, I did pick up one trick. Place your cake turn-table on a large #10 can or something similar. The fondant will stretch out and hang a bit, which made creating smooth sides much easier.

Next, I created the quilted look on the 3rd and 1st layer. I bought a quilt cutter and wow, do I love that tool! I didn't space it very well, because I was short on time, but I loved the look and was very quick.

I piped a decorative border around the edges of the white round cakes and started on the bottom red square cake. This was going to be a challenge. Somehow I had to make it look good. I made the mistake of using cornstarch on it, as I was rolling it out and it did not look very good. A little alcohol and a brush helped that situation out.

I had several ideas for creating a black-lace look on this layer, but went with what I thought would be the easiest and the quickest; piping cornelli lace. My hand and wrist were killing me by the time I was done, but it successfully hid alot of my mistakes.

By now it was time for bed, but I stayed up to finish the quilting. I created more of the little blue flowers (55 in all) to use on the quilt intersections of top layer. I loved the look! They were so sweet! I was done by 12:30am. We had to get up early for the wedding the next morning, but I knew I would have a little bit of time the next afternoon (before the reception) to finish the cake topper.

After a wonderful wedding and luncheon, we made it home around 3:30pm. I had two hours before I had to bring the cake over to the reception center. I pulled my new Cricut Cake (in all it's bright red shinyness!) and cut Leia's and Brandon's monograms. I really should have let my gumpaste sit for 24 hours, so it wasn't perfect, but at this point, I wasn't being picky.

I pasted the monograms to two white circle medallions I had made and then brought the cake and everything else over. My friend Cheryl and I held the cake in the back seat of my husband's truck, holding our breath on each pot-hole, train track and curve, but all was well and safe. Phew!

Leia & Brandon cut the cake and smushed it all over their faces.

We clapped.

We smiled.

It was a great day and I was honored to be a part of it.

No Spring Skips it's Turn!

Despite the stop and go weather we've been having this spring (snow one day, warm the next) there is one thing that you can be sure of in the spring.

Baby animals!

I especially love lambs.

So when I saw these cards at my card group last month, I straight away asked my friend and card-maker, Shauna Hunt, if I could share them with you.

Shauna is a great photographer and enjoys turning her photographs (with a little photoshop help) into cards.

One Sticker - Two Cards

These are not your Mother's stickers...or my own, for that matter. Remember the early days of scrapbooking / card making and your local store had rolls and rolls of stickers?

Yes, I have a small stash of those. Bet you do too.

I found these 4-in-1 stickers a few years ago at a clearance store. I bought 12 of them, thinking they would make a quick card.

Well, 2 years later and 12 hours before my card group met for lunch and exchange, I put them to use! And yes, they really did make a quick card!

Even better, I'm going to get two months worth of cards out of these stickers.

When you have to make 12 cards every month, the trick is to keep your eye out for multi-packs. Or in this case, a clearance price that makes it worth it.

Amazingly, I found these still available online: Memories Complete. They are called Dollar Stickers.

They are $1 each online, but I found a coupon code of 30% off (MC30). They are located in Lindon, UT...maybe they would allow pickups?

I actually pulled out a stamp for this card! (I really need to start stamping again.) I needed some kind of sentiment to fit into the circle. A few more great stash items: Prima flowers, some gem brads and the old 'little extra' standby, glitter glue!

Super quick, bright and just what I needed in my card file: Wedding cards! It seems like everyone is getting married this month!
