Cut & Print Technique Video for Cards

Those of you familiar with my work, either through the Paper Crafts Magazine, but especially through Q's Creative Classes, I love to share my Cut & Print Technique.  It has literally changed the way I create with paper.

I've been getting more requests lately, from newer students who would like to know how to do this, so I'm reposting this video I did with Northridge Publications about 1 1/2 years ago.  In it I explain the whole process, so enjoy!

Oh my goodness, Susan Neal and Kristine McKay (super crafty Studio 5 contributor) in the same room! We had SO much fun doing this. Too much fun! We had to do several takes because we just went on and on and on. Hope you enjoy the tips, ideas and free downloads!

I knew when I found this quote by Jane Austin, that it would make the perfect birthday card.  There's nothing more celebratory than banners, so it was a great fit.  Download the PDF (or use the JPEGS) to print out 2 cards per 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of white cardstock.  (scroll down the page a bit to find it, as it is older). The rest is scoring, folding and getting creative with punched out circles.  Mix & Match, change up the colors and make a bunch!

Here's another quick card that requires a scallop edged circle paper.  Cut off the scallops and follow the step-by-steps below.

Cut & Print technique: This is by far my favorite and most requested technique.  You'll be able to customize every card (or scrapbook page!) and will save you money.

Create your sentiment on a word program or photo editing software.  There are thousands of free fonts to download; I like having a huge selection to suit my mood and project.

Print sentiment on plain printer paper.  Place the sentiment in the center of the page, but not right at the top.

Use re-positional adhesive to tack die-cut (or punch, or sticker or whatever else you want to print on) directly over the printed sentiment.  To check that your placement is correct, hold the page up to a light source.  Move if necessary.

Run the page back through the printer.  Perfect placement everytime!  You can download the PDF (or JPEG) on my free download page.  Enjoy!

Here's another trick...distress the edges of your die-cut before you remove it to place on your project.  So much easier!

Studio 5: Baklava, Better Bugs & the "Bomb"

Gee, not sure where to start! They sure kept me busy on Studio 5 yesterday. And as much as I loved preparing for and sharing my segments on Baklava and Things with Wings, I have to say the highlight was completing my Minute-to-win-it task in under 60 seconds and helping Leslie Cuppitt win a Cricut Cake Machine!

{notice Brooke isn't in this shot? This is where she just couldn't watch and walked away!}

I am SORE this morning! But can I just say, if you EVER get the opportunity to do something that scares you and might possibly embarrass you...DO IT. Wow, that was SO fun.
{I didn't plan on sharing a picture of my practicing, or I would have worn something besides sloppy sweats and fuzzy socks, but I just couldn't resist how excited I looked here!}

My sweet friend, Charisse kept me company that day, helped me carry things and took pictures as well. Loved having her with me and I love how absolutely BEAUTIFUL she looks next to my goofy face!
ok, let's go ahead and watch my 60 seconds of excitement!

And now, for the...rest of the story. Here are my two planned segments. First, let's make pastry! Greek pastry, no less. I needed to come up with a recipe with honey and frankly, I can't think of one recipe that uses more honey than Baklava.

I'm don't have a big sweet tooth, but it makes it all the more surprisingly how much I love this sticky sweet treat. It's so addictive and highly dangerous to have made as much of this as I have over the last few weeks as I tweaked my recipe.

Please visit the Studio 5 website for the complete article, step by step photos and of course, the recipe. Oh, and be sure to try adding chocolate chips, it is killer! Takes it to an all new sweet level

If you love paper crafting things with wings, then watch the video and read the
article to be inspired by some summertime projects and simple techniques to make 'better bugs'.

Thanks for watching and stay tuned for my next Studio 5 segment on June 8th!

*Sneak-peek winner: Ok, I really need to make my sneak-peek easier as no one guessed it completely. I promise, next time will be better! In the meantime, I think Shelley came the closest. She's from Las Vegas and here's her
website if you'd like to get to know her better. Thanks for playing and try again everyone!

Studio 5 Sneak-peek for May

It's that time again...I will be on Studio 5 tomorrow! Tuesday, May 17 at 11am on Channel 5 here in Salt Lake City. Got two exciting segments planned and I would LOVE it you could try and guess what they are...

Just leave a comment on this post with your guess and I'll pick a winner after the show (I tried to make is easy this time gals...so GUESS!)

Oh, and I'm not sure I want to share this with you. I'm quite prepared to be completely embarrassed...but Studio 5 has asked me to participate in their version of Minute to Win it. It'll be late in the show if you want to catch it.

Frankly, I'm terrified! My biggest worry is that I won't have the stamina to actually do it! I have very weak arms, carpal tunnel and all sorts of other arm issues. If I do make it through it I'm sure my arms will be useless for days. LOL

I have to unroll two 500 rolls of using only my hands and arms. If you'd like to see just what they are MAKING me do, watch here and here. Then pray for me :)

Trend Alert: Fruit Basket

It's not surprising to see fruit all over our paper crafting products. Great silhouettes, colors and sweet associations. What's not to love? Well, actually, apricots...but that's another story.

Watch my segment below to see 3 fruit products and 3 fruit projects, from little girlie fun to sophisticated home decor. And when it's time to make dinner, check out my Jamaican Papaya Salad with it's cool dressing twist. It's at the Studio 5 website, but with the wrong picture. Hopefully that will be corrected soon, but either way, I'll be posting the recipe here a little later.

My first pick for product is from Doodlebug. Simply adorable patterns with strawberries and cherries. Their boutique brads are almost good enough to eat!

I created this little girlie trinket tote. I used Provo Crafts Chipboard purse, Maya Roads chipboard tags and rub-ons from American Crafts. What a fun summer-time project to make with your little girl (or maybe even your big one?).
I simply painted the chipboard, traced each side on the paper, trimmed, adhered and sanded off the edges. The rest is just embellishing with ribbon, tags and those yummy brads.

I discovered this cute little stamp company when I was researching fruit stamps. Check out Lizzie Anne's designs. I loved the mix of traditional fruit shapes with more contemporary patterns. Had so much fun creating this super simple gift bag.

I used my cat's eye ink pads to ink the rubber (blending slightly) and stamped randomly all over the bag and then added some of her sayings with black ink.

Sometimes I just love to simply stamp without nary an embellishment. Unless you count the tissue paper?

Lastly, I wanted to share a little technique called negative silhouette that works so perfectly with the shapes of fruits. Simply cut your shape but use the negative shape instead of the positive. Layer this over your choice of patterned paper (you could also stamp it) for a dramatic look.
I used an inexpensive shadowbox type frame or a floating frame. If your frame doesn't give you enough depth between layers you can add some with foam squares.

With Home decor you'll want to keep it simple, more graphic and with less embellishments. Here I've added a simple rhinestone and bead to highlight the leaves.

Note: Our Studio 5 sneak-peek winner is Sadie!

sadie said...

I am going to guess
1. preparing something with mango's
2. making a very cute hat box/or makeup box.
3. a pear from cricut shadow box.
4. a delicious salad
thanks sadie

Sadie came the closest to guessing just what I was doing today. In fact, she was RIGHT on the pear silhouette. And the salad is definitely delicious. Since no one got it exactly, I think that means I made my pictures a bit too hard this time.

Sadie has won a collection of the adorable Doodlebug collection and a Provo Craft chipboard piece. Congratulations!

Studio 5 Sneak-Peek Contest

I'm all ready for Studio 5 this coming Monday (June 15th, 11am, channel 5) and as always like to tease you a little bit with these mini photos. If you can guess what I'll be doing (both papercrafting and cooking) you'll win a prize! Only one winner and since I probably made this TOO easy again, I'm looking for as exact a guess as possible.

Good luck and hope to see you (yes, I have xray tv vision and CAN see you watching me!) on Monday! Sue

Studio 5: Graduation Card & Panini Party

In preparing this segment I realized what a great opportunity highschool graduation can be for parents to 'fuss' over their child. Really, just birthdays, their wedding (which they share with spouse) and graduation(s).

In some ways this milestone is more than just finishing a course of study, it is moving from childhood to adulthood (at least we can hope!). It's a great time to celebrate their accomplishments but also encourage and support them in their future endeavors.

I hope you enjoyed some of my ideas for cards, invitations, announcements etc...

Below is the free download we mentioned on air. Please visit my download site and enjoy my road card. You could easily make a dozen of these in less than an hour. I have to tell about my road photo. Steve took me to fish at Strawberry Reservoir last May and while we were driving around I noticed a sign on a steep part, got out of the car, took my picture and then noticed how cool the road looked with it's incline, cracks and yellow lines. I lay down on the road to capture this angle.

A few months later Susan Opel at PaperCrafts magazine asked me to create a photo card around the quote (on card). I immediately remembered my road photo and the rest was easy. It's in the current issue of PaperCrafts magazine in the Photo Finish column.

So, don't forget to take pictures of odd things you normally wouldn't and create a photo library. These are easy and effective cards. I am planning on doing a tutorial on adding text to a photo soon, so stayed tuned.

Important note: Rebecca from Montaque Photography alerted me to my mentioning on air about scanning in a professional photograph to copy. I must apologize to all of you. This is illegal; please don't do it. I knew this, but obviously forgot it when I was trouble-shooting my "if you didn't buy the CD scenario". Really, if you didn't buy it, your photographer (if they offer this service) will most likely still have your pictures on file. And please take a moment to visit Rebecca's website, her work is truly stunning.

And here are my yummy panini recipes! We sat around after the show and munched them all up! Crunchy, buttery bread. Melty, crunchy bits of cheese, the zing of mustard and horseradish...you just can't go wrong!

Visit the Studio 5 website for more details about the Graduation card segment and the Panini Segment.

Lastly, the winner of my Studio 5 Sneek Peek Give-away is LeAnn! I guess I need to make my photos a little harder as so many of you got it right!

Studio 5 'Spread the Love' Video

Oh wow, I knew the odds were good I'd forgot something after only 3 1/2 hours sleep last night, but I did NOT think it would one my favorite quotes, "Never supress a generous thought." by Camilla Kimball. Seriously, it's only FIVE words!

Studio 5 'Spread the Love' projects

I'll be posting the video of my segment a little later today, but here are some of the projects for a closer look, quotes and digital elements for you.

For my "POOF" Box of Chocolates...

“This guy found a bottle on the ocean, and he opened it and out popped a genie, and he gave him three wishes. The guy wished for a million dollars, and poof! There was a million dollars. Then he wished for a convertible, and poof! There was a convertible. And then, he wished he could be irresistible to all women…”

“POOF!” he turned into a box of chocolates.

You can use any kind of chocolate, but a box does tie in nicely... and don't forget the punchline! It needs to be hidden and then revealed for it to be FUNNY. I've had this joke for years and it still makes me laugh!

Here are two of the digital elements I created for this segment.

I will get these somewhere to download later today, but in the meantime, feel free to email me and I'll send you the jpeg with a tutorial on how to use them.

Happy Valentine's! Sue

Build-your-own Button/bling/tree buffet

Here's my latest Studio 5 segment promoting our Holiday Cards & More issue. Awesome issue by the way, many great ideas that are affordable and do-able.

I just had to laugh when Brooke called it the Build-your-own button/bling/tree buffet! But she's right! That's exactly what it is. Something to graze on without adding any calories!

Creative friend & Halloween Treats

I know a LOT of creative people. I also know a LOT of really NICE people. I'm lucky that way. I hope to share some of those people with you on this blog and I'd like to start with my dear friend and colleague, Alisa Bangerter. What better way to do that then watching this video of Alisa doing 'her thang' on Studio 5 (yup, we're TV buddies!). Actually, Alisa is Studio 5's Party, Holiday and Ideas regular contributor. She does a phenomenal job and I know you'll enjoy this segment, just in time for Halloween!

{Oh My Gosh, aren't those mummy twinkies adorable! And those wafer cookies? Amazing!}

Oh, and in case you're wondering...yes, Alisa is also a PC Pro for PaperCrafts magazine. She gets lots of opportunities to share what she loves. Aren't we ALL lucky? Sue

World Card Making Day...Latest Studio 5 segment

>

Well, friends, after a really long day, I have arrived in beautiful Virginia. I'm so excited to visit one of our winning stores, All About Scrapbooks, here in Chesapeake, VA. We are going to have FUN! Making cards, meeting new friends, prizes galore and of course, chocolate...because I've decided you really can't papercraft without chocolate. it's the rule :).

So, check back, starting Saturday onwards on this blog and also my fellow PC Pros (Wendy Johnson, Alisa Bangerter, Kim Kesti and our fearless Susan Opel) to read and see our World Card Making Day adventures.

Take a minute to check out my latest Studio 5 segment, all about our latest and BEST special issue, Card Creations #6, some awesome birthday card ideas and of course, some chatter about World Card Making Day. It was a funny day at Studio 5...new table and the cards kept falling off and then just when I thought the segment was over...it wasn't! You'll notice I get 'real' comfortable and chatty and then this light comes in to my eyes as I realize that no, we are still on the air! Lots of fun.

Dearly hoping you are all making plans for creating cards this Saturday. Sue

Recent Studio 5 segments

I was just sharing this link with someone who was asking about card swaps and thought you might be interested as well.

I've been doing monthly segments promoting PaperCrafts Magazine for a local Salt Lake City TV morning program called Studio 5 for 1 1/2 years now. I've had so much fun doing this program and continue to learn so much from it. Besides sharing my passion for papercrafting, I've been able to do several cooking segments (my favorite was a trio of brie appetizers...will have to share those with you soon) and also having my daughter, Savannah on air with me...although I will have to say, this was just 2 days after we got home from our 3 week trip to Europe and I think you can see how jet-lagged we seem.

So, now that Studio 5 is posting their segments on the internet, I can share my 'tv' experiences with friends and family. This first one is my most recent and is all about on-line swapping. Unfortunately, the timing was a little off, as we're in the middle of changing to a new website and it's all a bit confusing. Once things are settled and I know what I'm talking about, I will let you know how to swap on our new website. This was a different kind of segment for me as I didn't create a thing! We taped part of the segment in advance at the office (yes, I got to pretend that was my office...it is NOT!) and I got to sit on a stool! I know that's silly, but I was pretty excited about mixing it up a bit. Now, I just have to get on the couch!! LOL

This was my June segment with Savannah. It was to promote our Papercrafting with Kids special issue (which is just awesome by the way). Both Savannah and I were kind of out of it, but we managed to get through it. Unfortunately, it only shows half of the segment and not the cooking segment we did.

Here's a picture I remembered to take at the very last minute to take for Savannah's scrapbook.
