I found this beautiful vintage Christmas paper from Bella Carta awhile back and while I was designing with it, I started singing 'Joy to the World' and I knew exactly what I should call this class, Heaven & Nature!

Sweet little Angels, Victorian carolers, winter scenes...with happy non-traditional colors. 

Snowflakes & winter nights all tied up with vintage ribbon and then finished off with dimensional snow and glitter!

Studio 5: Easy Chalkboard Tags - free printables!

Busy weekend getting ready for a last-minute segment for Studio 5...but so happy I got to share these printable chalkboard tags with you...just in time for gift-wrapping (unless you're one of those uber-organized people who has had her gifts wrapped for weeks!)

You'll have to watch the video to find out my true paper-crafting confession!  I'm hoping some of you can share in my shame.

But shame & problem solved with these quick, easy printable tags that are actually best when kept simple.  These are design heavy, so just cutting them out and tying them to a gift is the best way to go.  

A few tips though...

Think BIG.  We normally think of tags as being small, but wow, what an impact they make when printed large!

Avoid busy background wrapping, stick to solid colors; white and craft look really good with chalkboard designs.  

Keep a handy basket of trims with your printed and cut tags so everyone can enjoy using them when needed.  Jute, twine, solid ribbon etc... all work well with these.

All printers work a bit differently, but the good news is I printed over a 100 sheets on less than one black cartridge.  I thought it would take much more, but I printed on draft/fast mode and it looked nice and chalky.  That's value!

If you're crafty and have time to embellish...you can!  Sponge a little white ink on tags and blend in with a cotton ball, it will add more chalkiness to parts of tag if you wish.

I love, love, love General's Pastel Chalk Pencils.  The only chalk pencils I know of with a pencil tip that can be sharpened to a point so you can color in some of the detailed parts of the tag.  This is what I'm using for my Chalkboard class (Chalkology) in January.  


Gems, brads, buttons or small silk flowers all work as well, just make sure they don't overwhelm the design.  On the other hand, BIG embellishments work well as long as they are next to and not on the tag (refer to my House tag gift bag with the large green poinsettia flower...big impact!)

 You can download the tags here (11 files!).  I keep my files on my Shutterfly account. (click on the PDF File tab at top of page to get downloads) Easy to download and refer back to if you ever lose them. Just download and save to your computer.  Open and print on white cardstock.

Studio 5: Christmas Cheer with Bite sized fun!

Here are some really tasty ideas for your upcoming Christmas get-together. You're all having one, right? Come on! It's easy; your home is already decorated and never looked so good, the Christmas carols are already queued up on your player, all you need are a few extra hours earlier in the day to cook and you're ready to spread some Christmas Cheer! There is nothing like paper crafting to brighten up the holidays, and it doesn't have to be time consuming or big...in fact sweet small projects are the focus of today's studio 5 segment. Don't forget to visit the Studio 5 website to see pictures of all the projects and the article I wrote.

Thanks to both Heather & Karen (you are SUCH an inspiration to me!) for their bitty nugget project ideas. They are SO darling and a bit hit at the studio.

Lastly, here are instructions to make the last 3 smallest projects, because I know you're all going to want to make them!

To create the nugget purse, cut a 1 ½” x 5” piece of red cardstock. Score at 1 ½”, 1” and again at 1 ½”. Corner round both corners of the last section. Distress edges of piece with ink if desired. Cut a 3/8” x 5” strip of patterned paper and adhere to middle of red piece. Punch two small holes in crease of first scored section on both sides. Thread 1/8” ribbon through, knot and trim for handle.
Adhere entire purse closed and embellish with a little flower, gem, brad, button etc…and a little gift tag printed on the computer.

To create the nugget wrap, punch a Scalloped Oval shape from cardstock. I used a Clever Lever Giga Craft punch by Marvy uchida, but you can use any similar shaped punch or even die-cuts. Score on either side of shape, approx. 1” for short ends. Punch a 1/8” hole in each end and thread a 5” piece of ¼” ribbon through holes. Adhere nugget to center of oval with a bit of adhesive and then wrap shape around the nugget and tie ribbon in a bow.

Students...does this look familiar? a smaller version of the large Hershey chocolate slide card we made in August. Thanks to one my students (don't hate me, I can't remember which one!!) for showing me the mini version they created, you totally inspired me to create this tiny Chocolate Slide: cut a 4” x 4 ¾” piece of cardstock. Score ¼” from one long end and 2 ¼” from the other end. Fold and then lay flat again. Stamp a sentiment on the bottom of one side, fold again and adhere along the bottom and side to create pocket. Punch 1 5/8” hole in top of pocket. Thread ribbon through both holes. Push chocolate into the pocket with the ribbon. Tie the ribbon into a bow in the front of pocket. Embellish front of slider with a tag, glitter glue, gems or punch out shapes. To open, just pull bow and it will reveal the chocolate without them having to untie the ribbon.

You can custom create your own little wraps and sliders depending on the size of chocolate you use, just alter the dimensions. Enjoy!

Q's Creative Card Class ~ Tag Box

I am a paper crafter. I make pretty things out of paper. WHY, then, do I panic every year on Christmas Eve and end up using business labels, folded-over wrapping paper and other quite tacky ways of 'tagging' a gift.

Never again! This year I've designed a Christmas Tag Collection Box that is so pretty that I'm leaving it out as Christmas decor and a ready reminder that it is filled with tags for the whole family to use!

This class will include everything you need to alter your paper mache box, create cute compartments and enough paper and embellishments to stamp 50 tags! That's 10 each of 5 different designs.


I've tried to schedule these classes for the earliest part of December because I know it's a busy month. I also figure that having a small break, creating something so useful and sharing some Christmas cheer (as in music & goodies) is a good thing.

A last minute Hostess gift

My favorite new spice to cook with? Grains of Paradise! Doesn't that just SOUND great? We first saw Elton Brown (yes, the food network) make an apple pie with this spice. Sounded interesting so we tried it and I'm hooked. It has an intriguing history you can read about here.


I use it now on just about everything I used to use freshly ground black pepper on. It has a similar initial peppery taste, but a lingering warmth that plain pepper lacks. The link will talk about hints, flavors and aromas, but I won't pretend like I understand all that, I will just say that I really, really, really like it.

I like to share new things I am excited about, so it's quickly become my hostess gift of choice and I try to keep a few extra grinders around for just such an opportunity. One came last weekend when I had a wonderful dinner at my Sister-in-law, Sandi's home. It slipped my mind a little bit, so I thew together a very last-minute tag to brighten up the gift.

It's really nothing special, but the exercise did remind me that as a papercrafter, a little homemade touch is a just moment away...literally. I took the grinder to my office, found some coordinating cardstock and ink to match the label, found one of my all-time favorite stamps "merci"(you know, 'cause it's French), a punch, a brad, some ribbon and there ya go, a 2 minute tag.
